About Euonymus occidentalis Nutt. ex Torr.
Euonymus occidentalis Nutt. ex Torr. is a shrub or small tree that reaches a maximum height between two and six meters. It has thin, green, oval-shaped leaves that are three to fourteen centimeters long, and their edges are sometimes rolled under. The inflorescence holds up to five small flowers at the end of a long peduncle. Each flower has five rounded, pink to brown and white mottled petals, which surround a central nectar disc marked with 5 nubs. Its fruit is a rounded capsule with three bulging lobes. The capsule opens to reveal one seed inside each of the three lobes, and each seed is concealed in a red aril. This species is native to western North America, ranging from British Columbia to California. In this range, it is the only member of its genus that grows wild.
