About Euonymus japonicus Thunb.
Euonymus japonicus Thunb. is an evergreen shrub or small tree that reaches up to 3 meters (10 feet) tall. It bears opposite oval leaves that measure 3 to 12 centimeters (1.2 to 4.7 inches) long, most commonly 6 to 10 centimeters (2.4 to 3.9 inches) long, with finely serrated margins along the end portion of the leaves. Its flowers are inconspicuous, greenish-white, and 5 to 6 millimeters (0.2 inches) across. The fruit capsule ranges in color from brown to yellow-brown or red-brown, and its seeds are covered with an orange-red aril. This species is very similar to Euonymus fortunei, especially when grown in cultivation. In wild habitats, E. japonicus has an upright growth habit, while E. fortunei is either climbing or procumbent.
