About Eunicella tricoronata Velimirov, 1971

This species of sea fan forms a flattened structure with curving branches, all of which typically grow within the same plane. Its color ranges from mustard yellow to orange. When it is feeding, its extended polyps give the entire fan a fuzzy appearance. It can grow up to 1 meter tall, and its branches measure between 0.7 and 1 centimeter wide. This sea fan is found exclusively around the South African coast, from the Cape Peninsula to East London, in water between 9 and 36 meters deep. It is endemic to this region. The sea fan most commonly grows in deeper water that is sheltered from wave action. It is preyed on by the whip fan nudibranch, Tritonia nilsodhneri, a species that looks very similar to the feeding sea fan.
