It occurs in Europe, Asia, and Africa, and is widely distributed across the Palearctic region. Its native range covers specific locations in multiple countries: western Afghanistan, Albania, northern Algeria, Armenia, eastern Austria, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, the Chinese provinces of Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Qinghai, and Xinjiang, Croatia, Cyprus, southern Czech Republic, northern Egypt, France including Corsica, Georgia, southwestern Germany, Greece including mainland Greece, Crete, and the Aegean Islands, Hungary, Iran, northern and central Iraq, Israel, Italy including mainland Italy, Sicily, and Sardinia, Jordan, southern Kazakhstan, Lebanon, northern Libya, southern Moldova, southern Mongolia, Montenegro, northern Morocco, North Macedonia, southern Pakistan, Palestine, southern Poland, Portugal including mainland Portugal and the Azores, Romania, central, southern, and eastern European Russia, northern Saudi Arabia, Serbia, southern Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain including mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands, and the Canary Islands, northwestern Switzerland, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, southern and eastern Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. This species has additionally been introduced to Belgium and the Netherlands.
