About Eucidaris thouarsii (L.Agassiz & Desor, 1846)

Eucidaris thouarsii, commonly called the slate pencil urchin, is named after slate pencils. It is a species of cidaroid sea urchin that lives in the littoral zones of the East Pacific Ocean. This species occurs in the East Pacific at depths between 0 and 45 meters (0 to 148 feet), with a range extending from Baja California to Panama, and also including Cocos Island, Clipperton Island, and the Galápagos Islands. Currently, the populations living on the Galápagos Islands, Clipperton Island, and Cocos Island are often classified as the separate species E. galapagensis, rather than being considered a subspecies of E. thouarsii.
