About Euchrysops malathana (Boisduval, 1833)

Euchrysops malathana, commonly known as the common smoky blue or smoky bean Cupid, is a species of butterfly in the family Lycaenidae. It can be found in south-western Arabia, and all of Africa south of the Sahara, including Madagascar. Males of this species have a wingspan between 22 and 30 millimeters, while females have a wingspan between 23 and 31 millimeters. Adult Euchrysops malathana are active year-round. In South Africa, their population reaches a peak of activity between December and May. The larvae of this butterfly feed on species from the genera Sphenostylis angustifolius, Medicago, Psidium, Canavalia, and Vigna. This includes the Vigna species V. triloba and V. unguiculata.
