About Euchloe tagis (Hübner, 1804)
Euchloe tagis, commonly called the Portuguese dappled white, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Pieridae. Its distribution spans southern Europe, from Portugal to northwestern Italy, and northern Africa, where discrete local populations exist in Morocco and Algeria. The adult imago of this species has a black apical patch marked with white spots on the upperside of its forewing, along with a black discoid macula. The underside of its hindwings is gray-green, covered with white spots that vary in size. Euchloe tagis occurs only in small, localized, isolated populations restricted to limited areas of appropriate habitat. This habitat always consists of calcareous outcrops with Mediterranean scrubland, where the species' host food plants, cruciferous plants of the genus Iberis, grow. The species has one generation per year, with adults flying from February to June. It overwinters in the chrysalis stage.
