This species, scientifically named Etroplus maculatus (Bloch, 1795), is also commonly called the orange chromide (sometimes referenced under the synonym Pseudetroplus maculatus). It is a cichlid species that is endemic to freshwater and brackish streams, lagoons, and estuaries in southern India and Sri Lanka. It is popular among fishkeeping hobbyists, and can grow to a maximum length of 8 cm (3.1 in).
