About Ethmia bipunctella Fabricius, 1775
The name Ethmia bipunctella that was invalidly described in 1936 by H. Rebel in L. Osthelder actually refers to Ethmia distimatella. The valid species Ethmia bipunctella (Fabricius, 1775) is a diurnal moth belonging to the family Depressariidae. This species can be found in Central and Southern Europe, North Africa, Asia, and the northeastern part of North America. Previously, Ethmia iranella was included in this species as a subspecies. The wingspan of Ethmia bipunctella ranges from 19 to 28 millimetres, or 0.75 to 1.10 inches. The moth's flight period runs from May to September. It is bivoltine, meaning it produces two generations per year. The main host plant for this moth is viper's bugloss, but it also uses Anchusa officinalis and plants from the genus Symphytum. Pupae of Ethmia bipunctella attach themselves to dead wood.
