About Etheostoma edwini (Hubbs & Cannon, 1935)
The brown darter, whose scientific name is Etheostoma edwini, is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish. It is classified as a darter in the subfamily Etheostomatinae, which belongs to the family Percidae — this family also includes perches, ruffes, and pikeperches. It is endemic to the eastern United States, where its distribution ranges from the St. Johns River drainage in Florida to the Perdido River drainage in Alabama. It lives in sandy runs of creeks and small rivers, particularly in areas close to vegetation. This species can grow to a maximum length of 5.3 cm (2.1 in). The brown darter was first formally described in 1935 by Carl Leavitt Hubbs and Mott Dwight Cannon, under the name Villora edwini. The type locality for this species is given as the Santa Fe River at Poe Springs, Florida. Its specific name honors American zoologist Edwin Phillip Creaser (1907–1981), who collected the type specimen and brought this species, along with others, to Hubbs' attention.
