The black-rumped waxbill, with the scientific name Estrilda troglodytes, is a common species of estrildid finch. It has an estimated global extent of occurrence of 2,000,000 km². This species has been recorded in Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, Togo and Uganda. It has been introduced to Guadeloupe (a French territory), Portugal, the United States (including Puerto Rico) and the Virgin Islands, where it may have died out. The species' conservation status is evaluated as Least Concern.
