About Estrilda perreini (Vieillot, 1817)
The grey waxbill, also called the black-tailed waxbill, is a common species of estrildid finch. This species has sometimes been classified under the scientific name Glaucestrilda perreini, with the original scientific designation Estrilda perreini published by Vieillot in 1817. It occurs in wetter areas of Southern Africa, and has an estimated global extent of occurrence of 670,000 km² (260,000 sq mi). Two subspecies are currently recognised. The nominate subspecies, G. p. perreini (Vieillot, 1817), ranges from Gabon to northern Angola, and extends east to southern Tanzania. The second subspecies, G. p. incana (Sundevall, 1850), ranges from southern Malawi and Mozambique to eastern South Africa. This waxbill lives in subtropical or tropical lowland moist shrubland. It has been recorded in Angola, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, Gabon, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has evaluated this species' conservation status as Least Concern.
