About Erythrura trichroa (Kittlitz, 1833)

Description: Male blue-faced parrotfinches (Erythrura trichroa) have plumage in multiple shades, ranging from light yellow-green to dark blue-green. Their forehead and face are covered in deep blue feathers, and their tails are generally red to rusty red-brown. They typically measure 13 cm (5.1 in) in length. Females have less vibrant blue plumage, are slightly smaller, and have a more rounded head. For blue-faced parrotfinches found in Queensland, there is no significant difference in plumage, bill shape, or genetic composition. This pattern is hypothesized to result from the species' nomadic behavior and continuous gene flow. Distribution and habitat: Blue-faced parrotfinches prefer rainforest edges and dense grasslands with woody plants, and they roost in rainforests. They have a wide distribution and can be found at various altitudes, ranging from sea level on hot tropical islands to 800–3000 m in New Guinea. Blue-faced parrotfinches are reported to make seasonal nomadic movements, which is partly due to their sensitivity to cold. In winter, they migrate to lowlands where there has been extensive rainforest clearance.
