About Erythrura prasina (Sparrman, 1788)
The pin-tailed parrotfinch, scientifically named Erythrura prasina, is a common species of estrildid finch. It is distributed in Southeast Asia, specifically Malaysia, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Burma, Vietnam, Thailand, and China. Its estimated global extent of occurrence is 10,000,000 square kilometers. This species inhabits subtropical and tropical moist forest, both in montane and lowland areas, and can also be found in bamboo thickets and rice plantations. Flocks of pin-tailed parrotfinches can cause severe damage to rice crops, so the species is categorized as a pest in parts of its range. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has classified the pin-tailed parrotfinch as a species of least concern. It is also a popular cage bird. According to Dr. Lawrence Heaney, a biologist from the Chicago Field Museum, on August 2, 2007, scientists on an expedition to the upper ranges of Mount Mantalingahan in southern Palawan province, the Philippines, announced the discovery of the pin-tailed parrotfinch alongside other animal species.
