About Erythronium purpurascens S.Watson
Erythronium purpurascens is a mountain wildflower that grows from a bulb 2 to 4 centimeters long. It produces two narrow green leaves that can grow up to 15 centimeters in length. Its erect stalks reach a maximum height of 20 centimeters, and each stalk bears one to six flowers. The flowers have white tepals with yellow bases that turn purple as they age. Each tepal is only one to two centimeters long and curls back. The stamens, their large anthers, and the style are all yellow. This species blooms when the last snow melts, an event that may not occur until summer at high elevations.
