About Erynnis juvenalis (Fabricius, 1793)
Erynnis juvenalis (Fabricius, 1793), originally described as Gesta juvenalis and commonly known as Juvenal's duskywing, is a species of butterfly belonging to the family Hesperiidae. This species is commonly found in eastern North American oak woodland habitats. Its distribution ranges from southern Manitoba, southern Quebec, and Nova Scotia in the north, southward to Texas and Florida. This dark-brown skipper is larger than most other eastern duskywing species, with a wingspan measuring 32 to 37 mm. In the eastern part of its range, it produces one brood per year, active from May through late June. In the southwestern part of its range, it produces two separate broods, one in spring and one in summer. Individuals of both sexes have between two and four white spots on the forewing. Females have grayer forewings and have more bold, distinct markings than males. Both sexes have two spots near the upper margins of the ventral side of the hindwings, a trait that is diagnostic for identifying this species. Oaks are the larval food plant for this species.
