About Eristalis pertinax (Scopoli, 1763)

This species has the scientific name Eristalis pertinax (Scopoli, 1763). Its wing length measures 8.25–12.75 mm. The third antennomere is brown-black. The arista is plumose all the way to its tip. The first and second tarsi are entirely yellow. The wing has a darkened median band with diffuse borders, and the pterostigma is four times as long as it is wide. This species is sexually dimorphic: males have a triangular abdomen, while females have a squarish abdomen. Hippa et al. (2001) published illustrations of the male genitalia, and Hartley (1961) published an illustration of the larva. This species occurs in the Palaearctic realm, ranging from Fennoscandia south to Iberia and the Mediterranean basin, including Ireland, and extending east through Europe to Turkey, European Russia, and as far east as the Urals.
