About Eristalis oestracea (Linnaeus, 1758)

Eristalis oestracea, commonly called the orange-tailed drone fly, is a species of hoverfly that is native to both Europe and North America. In Europe, this species occurs in bogs, moors, and coastal dunes. It feeds on nectar from two groups of flowering plants: white flowers that belong to the carrot family, Apiaceae, and yellow flowers that belong to the aster family, Asteraceae. Very little is known about this species' populations or ecology in North America. Adults of E. oestracea have a body length that falls between 14 and 15 millimeters.
