About Eristalis nemorum (Linnaeus, 1758)

This is a technical description of Eristalis nemorum (Linnaeus, 1758); for morphological terminology, refer to resources on the morphology of Diptera. Wing length ranges from 8.25–10.5 mm (0.325–0.413 in). All tarsi are extensively black, body hairs are short, and the arista is plumose on its basal half. The densely dusted face bears a shining black stripe. In males, the hind femora are black. Wings are hyaline with a quadrate brownish pterostigma located basal to where vein sc merges with the costa. Body hairs are yellow, and the hind metatarsi are darkened. Hippa et al. (2001) published illustrations of the male genitalia of this species, and Hartley (1961) published an illustration of its larva.
