Male genitalia of this species were figured by Hippa et al. (2001), and the larva was figured by Hartley (1961). This species has a Palaearctic distribution. Its range extends from Fennoscandia, Iceland, and the Faroes, south to central Spain, where it occurs only in montane areas at the southern limit of its range, and it is absent from most of South Europe. It is found in Ireland, and ranges east through Northern Europe, Central Europe, and the Alps, into Russia as far east as East Siberia.
