About Eristalinus aeneus (Scopoli, 1763)

For terminology used in this description, refer to Morphology of Diptera. Wing length of Eristalinus aeneus ranges from 6.5 to 9.25 mm. The eyes are patterned with distinct black spots. The second and third tergites are completely shiny. The thoracic dorsum has faint greyish stripes; populations in Southern Europe have five strong grey stripes instead. In males, the eyes meet along the frons. In females, the lower half of the eyes is bare. The hind tibiae have a black ring located after the midpoint, and segments 2 through 4 of all tarsi are darkened. Illustrations of the male genitalia were published by Pérez-Bañón et al in 2003, and illustrations of the larva were published by Hartley in 1961. This species has a cosmopolitan distribution. A distribution map is available on iNaturalist.
