About Eriothrix rufomaculatus (De Geer, 1776)
Eriothrix rufomaculatus (De Geer, 1776) is a bristly fly species. Adults of this species reach a body length of 5–10 millimetres (0.20–0.39 in) and a wingspan of 13–15 mm. Its thorax is greyish, marked with four narrow black stripes. The species has a cylindrical abdomen, with prominent, variable-sized orange patches along the abdominal sides, divided by a black dorsal line. Its face is silvery, with a protruding mouth edge. Legs are entirely black. Wings are slightly shaded overall, and yellowish at the base. Vein m is petiolate, and the costal spine is longer than vein r-m. This species has been recorded in Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, China, the British Isles, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Macedonia, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, Austria, Belgium, Channel Islands, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Kazakhstan, North Korea, Iran, Israel, Palestine, Russia, and Azerbaijan. It is a rather common species that mainly lives in hedgerows, grasslands, sunny rough ground, meadows, ruderal areas, and fields.
