Eriospermum capense produces a single heart-shaped leaf that grows 7.5 cm long and 6 cm wide, and has a suberect to spreading growth habit. The leaf emerges between April and October, which corresponds to winter in the southern hemisphere. Its upper surface is dark green, while its underside is red; the upper surface sometimes also has reddish ridges. This species grows from an irregular to pear-shaped tuber with reddish-purple flesh. It flowers from November to March. Eriospermum capense is widespread and common in the south-western winter-rainfall regions of South Africa.
