About Erionota torus Evans, 1941

Erionota torus, described by William Harry Evans in 1941, is a butterfly species that belongs to the family Hesperiidae. It is commonly known by several common names: the rounded palm-redeye, Sikkim palm dart, Sikkim palm red-eye, and banana skipper. This species ranges from southern and northeast India to Burma, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, and China, and it has also been recorded in Taiwan. The wingspan of adult Erionota torus measures 65–70 mm. Adults are active on the wing from April to November, and they feed on nectar from banana tree flowers. The larvae of this species feed on the leaves of Musa coccina, Musa formosana, Musa nana, Musa sapientum, Musa uranoscopos, and Cocos nucifera. Larvae construct leaf shelters, reach a length of approximately 50 mm when fully grown, and pupate inside the leaf shelter they built.
