It is widely distributed across much of western North America, ranging from Alaska east to the Northwest Territories, and extending south to California and New Mexico. This species is a biennial or perennial herb that grows up to 35 centimeters (14 inches) tall. Each stem of the plant typically produces 1 to 8 flower heads.
