Ergalatax contracta, first formally described by Reeve in 1846, has a shell that ranges in size from 20 mm to 45 mm. This marine species is naturally distributed across the Red Sea, Persian Gulf, areas of the Indian Ocean along Madagascar, the Philippines, Sulu Archipelago region of the Pacific Ocean, Australia's Torres Strait, Hawaii, and Tonga. It is also found as an invasive species in the Mediterranean Sea.
