About Erebia alberganus von Prunner, 1798
Erebia alberganus, also called the almond-eyed ringlet, has a wingspan of 40 millimeters. These small butterflies have dark brown wings, marked with a row of distinct postdiscal oval or almond-shaped orange markings that hold small black spots with white highlights. The upper and lower sides of the wings are identical in pattern. Females are typically slightly larger and a lighter shade of brown than males, and their eyespots also have small white centers. This species looks quite similar to the woodland ringlet, but it has smaller eyespots. A short description of this species (published under the name ceto) was provided by Wheeler in 1903.
This species occurs in alpine regions of France, Italy, Switzerland, and Austria, the mountains of central Italy, and select mountain areas of the northern Balkans. It inhabits flowery meadows, clearings, grassy areas, and sites within scrub or woodland, at elevations ranging from 1,000 to 2,200 metres (3,300 to 7,200 ft) above sea level.
