Equisetum myriochaetum, commonly called Mexican giant horsetail, is a species of horsetail. It is native to Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Peru. This is the largest known horsetail species. Individuals commonly reach 4.6 meters (15 feet) in height, and the tallest recorded specimen measured 7.3 meters (24 feet). Each node on the plant produces a whorl of up to 32 small branchlets. This species is semi-aquatic, and most often grows along riverbanks. It is harvested for medicinal purposes. In Mexico, it is harvested and sold to treat kidney disease and type 2 diabetes, and it has a long traditional use as a diuretic.
