Epistrophella emarginata (Say, 1823) is a common hoverfly species native to North America. The larvae of this species are predators of aphids. When ready to lay eggs, females deposit their eggs on leaf petioles. This species has been recorded in the following regions: in the United States, it is found in Washington D.C., Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin; in Canada, it occurs in Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick; and in Central America, it can be found in Mexico and El Salvador.
