It is native to Andorra, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, France, Britain, Ireland, Germany, Sweden and Denmark. It grows on calcareous substrates across a range of habitats, including dunes, scrub, and forests of beech, oak, and conifers. This species is thought to be consistently self-pollinating, with pollination taking place before its flowers open.
