About Epinephelus adscensionis (Osbeck, 1765)
Epinephelus adscensionis, commonly called the rock hind, is a species of ray-finned fish that belongs to the grouper subfamily Epinephelinae. This species has a broad geographic range. It can be found around Ascension Island and Saint Helena Island, as well as in the western Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Adult rock hind reach a maximum length of 61 centimetres and a maximum weight of 3 kilograms. Rock hind inhabit rocky reefs at depths ranging from 2 to 100 metres. Their diet consists primarily of crabs and fish. Around Saint Helena Island, rock hind are most frequently encountered in shallow water.
