About Epimedium alpinum L.

Epimedium alpinum, commonly called alpine barrenwort, is a flowering plant species that belongs to the genus Epimedium. It is native to mountainous regions of Italy, Austria, the former Yugoslavia, and Albania, and has been introduced to central Europe. This is a dwarf perennial plant that is well-suited for growing in rock gardens. Botanist John Lindley once jokingly remarked that this species is "known only in the gardens of botanists". Its hybrid with Epimedium grandiflorum, named Epimedium × rubrum, has received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.
