This species is distributed across Australia, with populations recorded in Tasmania. Adults of this moth have an approximate wingspan of 30 millimeters. The caterpillar larvae of Epicoma melanosticta feed on Calothamnus validus, Calothamnus homalophyllus, and various species of the genus Leptospermum.
