Ephedra intermedia Schrenk & C.A.Mey. occurs in deserts, grasslands, floodlands, river valleys, slopes, cliffs, and sandy beaches. It grows at elevations ranging from 100 to 4,600 metres (330 to 15,090 ft), in dry rocky or sandy habitats. This plant reaches a height of 1 metre (3.3 ft). Its strobili are dioecious: any single individual plant bears only male or only female strobili, so both male and female plants are required to produce seeds.
