About Eocronartium muscicola (Pers.) Fitzp.
Eocronartium muscicola (Pers.) Fitzp. is a fungus species in the order Platygloeales. It is the only species in the monotypic genus Eocronartium. In the United Kingdom, its recommended English common name is moss rust. This parasitic fungus produces clavarioid basidiocarps (fruit bodies) when growing on mosses. At least 21 moss species, all from the subclass Bryidae, have been recorded as hosts for Eocronartium muscicola. The fungus parasitizes its moss hosts using gametophytic transfer cells. The species is considered widespread, with most of its confirmed reports coming from Europe, North America, and South America.
