About Entomobrya nivalis (C.Linnaeus, 1758)
This cosmopolitan springtail, Entomobrya nivalis, measures approximately 2 millimeters in length. It has a yellow or white base color, with dark pigment forming transverse bands across the third thoracic segment and abdominal segments 2 through 6. A distinctive U- or 11-shaped pattern on the fourth abdominal segment easily sets this species apart from other members of the genus Entomobrya.
Entomobrya nivalis occurs in temperate and polar regions of North America and Europe. Juveniles typically live in forest leaf litter, and migrate upward after reaching adulthood to live among lichens growing on trees. In winter, the species shelters under loose sections of tree bark. Its hemolymph contains high levels of antifreeze compounds, which let it survive very low winter temperatures.
