About Ennomos magnaria Guenée
Ennomos magnaria is a moth species belonging to the family Geometridae. It is commonly known by several names: maple spanworm moth, notched wing moth, notched-wing geometer, and notch-wing moth. Achille Guenée first formally described this species in 1857, with the published description appearing in 1858. This moth is found across southern Canada and the northern United States from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast. In the eastern portion of its range, it extends south as far as Florida and Louisiana; in the western portion, it reaches south to California. Adult moths have a wingspan that measures between 43 and 60 mm. They closely resemble an autumn leaf in appearance. There is one generation of adults each year, and they are active in flight from July through early November. Adults are nocturnal, and they often rest on buildings during daylight hours. The larvae of this species feed on the leaves of multiple tree and shrub genera, including Alnus, Fraxinus, Tilia, Betula, Ulmus, Carya, Acer, Quercus, and Populus.
