About Ennomos alniaria (Linnaeus, 1758)

This species, Ennomos alniaria (Linnaeus, 1758), has a wingspan of 34–42 mm, and forewings that measure 16–20 mm in length. It resembles Ennomos quercinaria, but can be distinguished by its canary-yellow thorax. Its forewings have a scalloped shape and two cross lines. The entire wings are ochre yellow with greyish flecks. The bands, small discal spot on the forewing, and larger discal spot on the hindwing are all grey. The larva is brownish-grey, long, and thin, with four raised cross-bands along its dorsal side. It closely resembles a dead twig. Other species within the Ennomos genus are similar in appearance. Its distribution ranges from the Caucasus and Russia to western Europe, with its northern limit at Fennoscandia and its southern limit at the northern Mediterranean. It has also been introduced into British Columbia.
