It has several common names: blackcheek threefin, Lord Howe black-head triplefin, and redcap triplefin. This species was first described by Edgar Ravenswood Waite in 1904. Its known distribution is in the western Pacific Ocean, found in waters off Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island, New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga.
