About Endomychus coccineus (Linnaeus, 1758)

Endomychus coccineus (Linnaeus, 1758) can reach a body length of approximately 4–6 millimetres (0.16–0.24 in). It has an oval, convex body, with almost straight sides along the pronotum. Its head and legs are black. The pronotum is glossy red, with a black longitudinal marking. The elytra are also glossy red, and each elytron bears two large oval black spots. In rare cases, the pronotum can be completely red, and the black spots on the elytra may be entirely or partially absent. This species has a flight period from April to June. The larvae are dark brown, with yellow to orange spots arranged symmetrically on the lateral regions of their segmented body: spots occur on the head shield, and on the third, fourth, eighth, and tenth body segments. This species is found across most of Europe, and occurs especially in deciduous forests.
