About Empis livida Linnaeus, 1758

Empis livida is a species of fly belonging to the family Empididae. It is classified within the subgenus Kritempis of the genus Empis. Adult males measure 7.5 to 9.3 millimetres (0.30 to 0.37 inches) in length, while adult females measure 7.5 to 10.2 millimetres (0.30 to 0.40 inches). Males have a brownish abdomen, and their wings have a faint brown clouded appearance. Females have a gray abdomen, and their wings are clear. E. livida inhabits hedgerows. It feeds on nectar from multiple species of Rosaceae, multiple species of Asteraceae, and nectar from Heracleum sphondylium, and it also preys on other insects. This species is distributed across all of temperate and Northern Europe, and it is the only species in its group that has this broad of a distribution. The larvae of E. livida are also carnivorous, and they live in damp soil and leaf litter. Adult E. livida fly between the months of April and July.
