This species, Emberiza schoeniclus (Linnaeus, 1758), is commonly called the common reed bunting. It is a medium-sized bird, measuring 13.5โ€“15.5 cm (5.3โ€“6.1 in) in total length and weighing 10โ€“28 g. It has a small but powerful bill adapted for eating seeds. Breeding males have a black head and black throat, a white neck collar, white underparts, and a heavily barred brown back. Females have much duller plumage, with a streaked brown head and more extensive barring on their underparts. The male produces a repetitive vocal song described as "srip".
