The masked bunting, whose scientific name is Emberiza personata, is a passerine bird that belongs to the bunting family Emberizidae. This species occurs in Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands, and Japan. Previously, the masked bunting was classified as a subspecies of the black-faced bunting (Emberiza spodocephala). Due to observed morphological and genetic differences, it is currently recognized as a distinct species. The masked bunting is a monotypic species, meaning no subspecies are currently recognized.
