About Elops saurus Linnaeus, 1766
Description: Like other species in the Elops genus, Elops saurus (commonly called ladyfish) has a long, slender, rounded body covered in silvery scales. It has a terminal mouth and a deeply forked tail. This species can be distinguished from related species by counting its number of gill rakers and vertebrae. Distribution: Ladyfish are found in the western North Atlantic Ocean, ranging from New England to Florida, as well as throughout the Gulf of Mexico. Their distribution overlaps with that of malacho (Elops smithi) in the southeastern United States and the southern Gulf of Mexico.
