About Eleoscytalopus indigoticus (Wied-Neuwied, 1831)
The white-breasted tapaculo, with the scientific name Eleoscytalopus indigoticus (Wied-Neuwied, 1831), measures 11 cm (4.3 in) in total length. Males weigh between 13 and 18 g (0.46 to 0.63 oz), while females weigh between 12.2 and 16 g (0.43 to 0.56 oz). Male white-breasted tapaculos have blue-gray upper parts and a reddish brown rump. Their throat, chest, and belly are white, and their flanks and vent area are chestnut with dark barring. Males living in a small portion of the species’ range have more extensive dark underparts. Females and immature birds are similar in appearance to males, but have browner upper parts. This species is found in Brazilian states, ranging from eastern Bahia south to northeastern Rio Grande do Sul; its distribution also includes western Paraná and eastern Santa Catarina. It lives in the undergrowth of open forest, at forest edges, and in dense secondary forest. It can be found at elevations up to 1,500 m (4,900 ft).
