About Eleocharis montevidensis Kunth
Eleocharis montevidensis Kunth is a rhizomatous perennial herb that grows in tufts or mats of erect, firm stems that reach up to half a meter in height. Its narrow, grass-like leaves have dark purplish or reddish-brown coloring at their bases, which lightens toward the leaf tips, and dry to a thin, papery texture. An oval-shaped spikelet inflorescence grows at the tip of each stem; this structure is under one centimeter long, and holds several flowers covered by brownish bracts. In some North American publications, this species has often been misidentified as either Eleocharis montana or Eleocharis palmeri. It is sometimes cultivated as an aquatic plant for water gardens.
