Elater ferrugineus Linnaeus, 1758 is a species that ranges from 17 to 24 millimetres (0.67–0.94 inches) in total length, and shows considerable morphological variation. Its head is dark brown. Males typically have bright orange or reddish pronotum and elytra, and are larger than females. Females have an entirely uniform dark brown coloration. The legs of this species are black, and antennae range in color from mid-brown to black. Male antennae reach as far as the posterior edge of the pronotum, while female antennae are shorter than this. This species is widely distributed across the Western Palearctic realm.
