About Ehrharta erecta Lam.

Ehrharta erecta Lam. is a species of grass commonly known by the common name panic veldtgrass. This species is native to Southern Africa and Yemen. It is a documented invasive species in the United States, New Zealand, Australia, southern Europe, and China. It is a perennial grass that normally grows to a height of 30 to 50 centimeters, though it can reach up to two meters tall. It can grow in a wide variety of habitats, and is even able to grow in shade. This species has been used for birdseed, and in ecological restoration projects such as dune stabilization. Despite these uses, it has become an invasive weed in many parts of the world. It produces flowers and seeds year-round, and its seeds germinate rapidly, forming new plants in just a few weeks. In Ireland, E. erecta was first recorded in the 18th century, while earlier records of the species exist from Great Britain.
