About Egretta picata (Gould, 1845)
Egretta picata, commonly known as the pied heron, is a small heron species. It measures 43โ55 cm (17โ22 in) in total length. Adults have dark slaty wings, body, and crested head, along with a distinct white throat and neck. Its overall appearance is similar to that of the white-necked heron. On average, males weigh between 247โ280 g (8.7โ9.9 oz), which is heavier than females that typically weigh 225โ242 g (7.9โ8.5 oz); males and females have similar outward appearances. Immature birds do not have the adult's crest or dark head colouring, and may resemble smaller versions of the white-necked heron. Juveniles of this species were once classified as a separate species. The primary habitat of Egretta picata includes a range of wetlands and wet grasslands.
