About Egretta intermedia plumifera (Gould, 1848)
As its scientific name suggests, the intermediate egret (referenced here as the subspecies Egretta intermedia plumifera) is intermediate in size between the great egret and smaller white egret species like the little egret and cattle egret; its size is closer to that of the little egret than the great egret. It measures approximately 56โ72 cm (22โ28 in) in total length, has a wingspan of 105โ115 cm (41โ45 in), and weighs around 400 g (14 oz). It has entirely white plumage, generally dark legs, and a fairly thick yellow bill. Breeding individuals may show a reddish or black bill, greenish yellow gape skin, loose filamentous plumes on the breast and back, and dull yellow or pink coloration on the upper legs; these breeding traits vary by region. Male and female intermediate egrets have similar appearance.
